Dresser Long Body Coupling

Style 40 Long Body Coupling
Steel Pipe

Long body bolted sleeve coupling for plain-end steel pipe in nominal sizes ½ in through 24 in. Bridges wider-than-normal pipe gaps with a single coupling — no spool pieces, no extra fittings.

Sizes ½ in – 24 in
Working Pressure to 1500 PSI
5 Gasket Compounds Available
AWWA C111 / ANSI A21.11 Bolting
3/8 in Expansion/Contraction
Standard pipe gap, no large separation? For typical butt-to-butt steel pipe joining where the pipe ends are close together, the shorter-body Dresser Style 38 is the lower-cost choice and delivers the same expansion/contraction performance.
View Style 38 →

The Dresser Style 40 Long Body Coupling is an engineered mechanical sleeve coupling designed for plain-end steel pipe where pipe ends are widely separated — a common field condition during repairs, replacements, and installations where a standard-body coupling cannot span the gap. Structurally similar to the Style 38, the Style 40 uses a longer middle ring with a larger belly diameter to bridge gaps that would otherwise require a spool piece, additional fittings, or pipe cutting on both sides of the joint.

Despite the added length, the Style 40 delivers the same joint performance as the Style 38 — absorbing up to 3/8 in of expansion and contraction per joint — making it suitable for service subject to thermal cycling, ground settlement, or vibration. Installation requires only a wrench. No threading, beveling, or precise pipe alignment is needed.

Bridges Wide Pipe Gaps
Extended middle ring with larger belly diameter spans wider-than-normal pipe separations without spool pieces or additional fittings.
3/8 in Joint Movement
Absorbs up to 3/8 in of expansion and contraction per joint — identical performance to Style 38 despite the longer body.
Working Pressure to 1500 PSI
High working pressure ratings across smaller diameters make Style 40 suitable for high-pressure steel pipe service. See spec table for size-specific ratings.
Tool-Only Installation
No threading, beveling, or pipe alignment required. Installs with standard hand tools directly in the field or ditch.
Single & 2-Piece Followers
Single-piece follower design used for sizes 3 in through 12 in. 2-piece followers on larger sizes for easier field handling.
Sizes ½ in – 24 in
Standard range covers full steel pipe spectrum from small-bore to large-diameter mains. Special and larger sizes available on request.

The Style 40 is supplied with one of five gasket compounds depending on service media, temperature, and durability requirements. Select the gasket matching your application from the product variant options at checkout. Armored variants use the AL-CLAD pinned-armor design for added cut, blowout, and extrusion resistance.

(27) Buna-S — Standard
Styrene-butadiene rubber. General water, wastewater, and air service. Most common selection for waterworks applications.
(27) Buna-S Armored
Grade 27 compound with AL-CLAD pinned-armor reinforcement. Added blowout and extrusion resistance for higher-pressure or more demanding water service.
(42) Buna-N
Nitrile rubber. Petroleum products, oils, hydrocarbons, and fuel service. Standard choice when line content is oil-based.
(42) Buna-N Armored
Grade 42 nitrile compound with AL-CLAD pinned-armor reinforcement. For high-pressure oil and hydrocarbon service.
(365) Graphite Fiber — High Temp
Graphite fiber gasket for high-temperature service where standard rubber compounds would fail. Specify when line temperature exceeds standard rubber limits.

Not every gasket compound is stocked in every size. Available gasket selections per size are shown in the variant picker above. For sizes or compounds not listed, contact our team.

Working pressure ratings based on Barlow’s formula using a working stress equal to one-half the minimum yield of the middle ring material. Overall length “L” taken with fasteners drawn up finger tight. Single-piece follower design used for couplings 3 in through 12 in. Consult factory for alternative gaskets and part numbers.

⚠ Seal Only — Pipe Joint Must Be Anchored
The Style 40 provides a pressure seal only. When pipe pullout could occur, the pipe joint must be independently anchored or restrained. Failure to anchor the joint could result in escaping line content and cause property damage, serious injury, or death. Confirm restraint requirements before installation.
