Description
Dresser Insulating Coupling

Style 39 Insulating Coupling
Steel Pipe

Bolted sleeve coupling with full-boot plastic insulator and Grade 41 insulating gasket on one end. Combines mechanical pipe joining and electrical isolation in a single assembly — eliminates the need for a separate insulating flange kit.

Sizes 3/4 in – 24 in
Working Pressure to 900 PSI
Cathodic Protection Ready
Dissimilar Metal Joining
Same Footprint as Style 38
No electrical isolation needed? For standard pipe joining without cathodic protection or dissimilar metal concerns, the Dresser Style 38 uses the same dimensional footprint at a lower price point.

The Dresser Style 39 Insulating Coupling provides both a mechanical pipe joint and complete electrical isolation in a single, field-proven assembly. It follows the same basic design and dimensions as the Style 38 coupling — with one critical addition: a full-boot plastic tubular insulator inside the middle ring that electrically separates pipe ends at the joint. The insulating gasket has a skirt that extends under the follower ring to isolate it from the pipe, while the armored gasket on the opposite end bonds the coupling to the pipe and can share cathodic protection currents. One coupling handles both mechanical joining and corrosion protection simultaneously.

Style 39 couplings are specified on lines requiring cathodic protection and wherever dissimilar metals are joined — conditions where uncontrolled galvanic current causes accelerated corrosion. They are widely used across gas distribution, oil transmission, and industrial pipeline applications. Insulating features can be supplied on both ends when the application demands complete end-to-end isolation.

Two Functions, One Unit
Mechanical coupling and electrical isolation in a single assembly. No separate insulating flange kit required — reduces installation time, parts count, and joint points.
Full-Boot Plastic Insulator
Dresser Spec 100 Plastic tubular insulator inside the middle ring ensures complete pipe-end separation. Insulating gasket skirt extends under the follower for full electrical isolation.
CP Current Sharing
Armored Grade 27 BUNA-S gasket on the conductive end bonds the coupling to the pipe so cathodic protection currents can pass through where needed.
Style 38 Footprint
Dimensionally identical to Style 38 — same bolt patterns, laying lengths, and OD ranges. Direct specification swap when isolation is added to an existing design.
Bilateral Isolation Available
Standard configuration is single-end insulating, single-end conductive. Available with insulating features on both ends when end-to-end isolation is required.
Gas & Oil Pipeline Service
Widely used on gas distribution, oil transmission, and industrial pipelines. Working pressures to 900 PSI in mid-range sizes — see spec table for size-specific ratings.
Fusion-Bonded Grey Epoxy
Factory-applied OD coating for corrosion resistance in buried and exposed service. ID bare to allow product flow without coating contamination.
Sizes 3/4 in – 24 in
Standard range covers small-bore distribution through large-diameter transmission. Larger sizes and special configurations available — consult inside sales.

Specifications include Armored Gaskets on the conductive end. Insulating end uses Grade 41 with extended skirt. Working pressure ratings based on standard configurations — consult factory for higher pressure ratings, larger sizes, or special configurations.

When to Specify Style 39 Instead of Style 38
Specify the Style 39 whenever the joint must be electrically isolated — lines on cathodic protection systems, dissimilar metal transitions (steel to copper, steel to ductile iron service lines), CP zone boundaries on transmission mains, or wherever stray current corrosion is a concern. If the joint does not require electrical isolation, the Style 38 is the lower-cost choice with identical mechanical performance.
