Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about specifying and sourcing Dresser gas distribution products through Watermain Supply.

What's the difference between Style 711 and Style 721?
Style 711 is a bolted mechanical coupling used for joining or repairing pipe in the field — same-size or transition between steel, PE, and cast iron in any combination. Style 721 is a mainline transition fitting only — a monolithic-body factory assembly that connects steel pipe to SDR 11 polyethylene mains in 3 in through 12 in sizes. The Style 721 gripping tooth profile is derived from the proven Style 711 design but the product is purpose-built for permanent steel-to-PE transitions and qualifies to ASTM F1973 Category 1.
Do I need conductive or insulating couplings?
Conductive couplings maintain electrical continuity along the pipeline — required when cathodic protection extends through the joint and the upstream/downstream pipe is the same material requiring a common CP system. Insulating couplings break electrical continuity — required at transition points between dissimilar materials (steel to cast iron, steel to copper) or wherever you need to isolate cathodic protection zones. Style 711 is available in both. If unsure, ask your engineer or call us with the system context.
How do I specify a Style 721 transition fitting?
You need six pieces of information: (1) nominal pipe size (3, 4, 6, 8, or 12 in); (2) PE cell classification — medium density 2708 or high density 4710; (3) dimension ratio (SDR 11 is standard); (4) approved extruder for the PE pipe; (5) steel pipe wall thickness if not standard SCH 40; (6) any special configuration requirements. The PE cell classification and SDR drive whether you order the H (HDPE) or M (MDPE) part number suffix.
Can I hot tap a cast iron main with LS-2 fittings?
LS-2 weld fittings are designed for steel pipe. For cast iron mains, the correct product is the Style 50 split repair sleeve, which is dual-purpose — emergency repair OR hot tap base. Style 50 sleeves can be ordered with custom branch service outlets up to 16 in IPS branch on a 24 in CIP main, and they integrate with LS-2 flange fittings for the actual hot tap operation. MAOP for the Style 50 is 100 PSI standard; higher pressures available on application.
What's the difference between LS-2 Class 150 and Class 300?
Class designation refers to the ANSI flange rating and the corresponding pressure rating. Class 150 LS-2 fittings are rated 285 PSIG and are appropriate for most gas distribution applications. Class 300 LS-2 fittings are rated 740 PSIG (per B31.8 with design factor 0.72) for all class locations — required for high-pressure transmission, fully-rated transmission service, and any application above 285 PSIG. Class 300 fittings have heavier wall thickness and substantially higher unit cost.
Are Dresser gas products certified for potable water?
No. The Dresser gas product line covered on this page (Style 401, 501, 502, 711, 721, LS-2 fittings, Style 175 / 275 / 575 / 350 / 351, and the Style 50 / 54 / 73 / 96 / 965 series) is engineered specifically for natural gas distribution. For potable water applications, see our Dresser Water collection — Style 38, 40, 62, 128, 167, and related water products carry NSF 61 / 372 certification. Don't substitute gas-line products into water service.
What's the lead time on Dresser gas products?
High-velocity items (Style 401, 501, 502, 711, 175 / 275 in common sizes) typically ship within 1–2 weeks. Style 721 transition fittings, larger Style 711 sizes, and LS-2 hot tap fittings ship factory-direct from Bradford, PA — lead times are typically 3–6 weeks but vary with current production. Custom configurations (Style 50 with branch outlet, large Style 96 sleeves) run 6–10 weeks. We confirm actual lead time on every quote.
Why don't you publish pricing on the website?
Dresser gas products are highly configured. A Style 711 coupling has dozens of permutations across material combinations, gasket grades, conductive vs. insulating, and pipe ODs. Style 175 curb valves alone come in 360-degree vs 90-degree, anode connector vs standard, e-coat vs plastisol, and four material combinations — that's over 30 SKUs in 1-1/4 in alone. Publishing one price would mislead more than help. Send us your pipe size, material, pressure, and configuration — you'll have accurate pricing within 24 hours.
What geographic area do you serve?
Watermain Supply is based in Houston, Texas. We primarily serve Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and New Mexico LDCs and gas-line contractors. We can quote and ship throughout North America — technical support and submittal turnaround are fastest for Gulf Coast projects.
Are you an authorized Dresser distributor?
Yes. Watermain Supply (a DBA of E4 Industrial LLC) is an authorized Dresser Utility Solutions distributor. All product is authentic Dresser, ships with full ASTM F2897 traceability documentation where applicable, and carries the standard Dresser factory warranty.
